The confluence of rivers Sava, Ljubljanica and Kamniška Bistrica

Area description
The confluence of rivers Sava, Ljubljanica and Kamniška Bistrica is near the settlement Dol pri Ljubljani. Here, river Sava flows through a cultural landscape formed by a mosaic of fields and meadows that are, near the village settlements, dotted with orchards. Although her flow was regulated several times in the past, the river shows here the most natural appearance in comparison with other river segments in the middle riverflow. In heavy rain and during spring snowmelt the river still overflows its banks and even has enough power to erode them, thus creating processes and phenomena that resemble the rivers primal image.

Access
We can arrive to Dol pri Ljubljani by taking an intercity bus from Ljubljana. From Dol we head to the river on foot. We first locate the parish church and continue our way on the main street towards east to the settlement Kleče. After 200 metres we make a right turn downwards. If we’re on the right path, we should soon see a large hall of the company Topdom on our right. We continue our way towards a small stream (Mlinščica) and then go over the bridge. A dirt road leading across the fields, which soon turns left, takes us to the riverine forest vegetation of Sava.

Trail description
We cross the forest by continuing our way on a cart track. After approximately 400 metres we reach large gravel bars on the left bank of the river. Walking on the easily accessible gravel bars should be avoided in the nesting period of the little ringed plover (from beginning of April to the end of June). The triple confluence is a kilometre upstream. To do birdwatching we have to choose an appropriate spot with a cover provided by riparian vegetation at either ends of the gravel bar. We can also go on a hike along the river – downstream towards the bridge at Dolsko and back up along the river bank on the other side. In order to do this hike we have to return to the point where we entered the gravel bars at the edge of the forest. We continue our way on the cart track along the river. The track later on makes a big turn over the fields and then returns closer to the river. We cross the bridge at Dolsko and continue upwards on a local road (with plenty of opportunities to get closer to the river bank) that goes along the railroad. Since there is no bridge on the other side that would enable a round trip, we have to return on the same way to get back to Dol pri Ljubljani.
This trip takes us three to four hours.

Birds
On this trip we will observe birds of the cultural landscape, forests and some waterfowl. The little ringed plover, common sandpiper, white-throated dipper, kingfisher and grey wagtail can be observed on the gravel bars during nesting. We also have to pay attention to golden oriole, red-backed shrike and common redstart that are present in the surroundings. Special bird species, such as the black stork, black kite, western marsh harrier appear here as well. In winter and migration time the cormorant, great egret, yellow-legged and black-headed gull, little stint, green sandpiper and common greenshank are common in the area.
