What we do
DOPPS-Birdlife Slovenia is an independent and a non-profit slovenian nature conservation and ornithological organisation, acting in public interest of nature conservation, environment protection and research. We have a network of over 500 skilled volunteers, 1000 members and 24 employees who work with the main aim of conserving birds and their habitats thus contributing to conservation of nature and welfare of the society.
Bird Monitoring
We manage the largest base of ornithological data in Slovenia. With the implementation of standardized surveys and monitoring, we track the condition of national bird populations. The implementation of a hollistic approach enables us to track the state of Slovenian nature as well as the consequences of human degradation to the environment.

Researching bird ecology and the implementation of gained knowledge into practice
In our work, we use internationally approved scientific research methods. Our research focuses primarily on recognising conservation threats to birds as well as identifying viable solutions to combat them. Habitat protection has proved as a significant conservation tool, which among others, manifest itself in defining and monitoring the Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in Slovenia.

Hands on nature conservation
In nature reserves, which may be owned by DOPPS-Birdlife Slovenia or managed through concession contracts, we implement detailed nature protection activities. Some of these projects have been running for over 20 years and are a great indicator of successful fieldwork. We especially focus on conserving flagship species, as they more often than not prove to be keystone species in their ecosystems.

Environment and conservation legislation
At DOPPS-Birdlife Slovenia we feel we have a social responsibility to uphold the public interest of nature conservation and environmental protection. As such we include ourselves in cases that are in breach of legislation and/or unsustainable explotation of natural resources. In order to resolve these issuses we use professional and legal tools as well as public participation and opinion.

Community involment
Acrocephalus is a scientific journal in which we publish a wide variety of research and subjects.Our members receive a quarterly magazine, called Svet ptic (The World of Birds) in which we cover our own work as well as topical pieces.

Public education
With public lectures, excursions and by publishing articles in the media, we educate the public of our natural heritage and the value of nature conservation for the whole community. We run workshops, seminars, camps for members as well as target groups such as children, teachers and farmers.

Integration of volunteers and youth
Volunteer work is the key for a successful and effective organisation. We offer multiple volunteer opportunities on a national level as well as in five regional sections. We also pay special attention to education, focusing on the younger population, by providing numerous opportunities to actively engage in our society’s work.

Helping birds
Members of our society are always willing to help birds in need. The society regularly deals with numerous cases; from injured birds to found chicks and suspected poaching. We also advise people how to manage their gardens and surroundings at home in order to aid with bird conservation.

Working together with other organisations
We work alongside other profit and non-profit, government and non-government organisations as well as any individual in Slovenia or around the world. Furthermore, we are on the constant lookout for any novel ways of modern nature conservation. With this purpose our organisation curates a library; the only specialised library for ornithology in Slovenia.

Searching for financial means and assistance
We work publicly and transparently. In order to implement our work, we apply for project grants, collect donations and for the sole purpose of conservation, accept all forms of assistance. All of which, must be in accordance with our principals and mission.
